Art of nature. Moments in time. Joy of creation.

Once you see nature creating such rich colors, it’s impossible to imagine that we allow the synthetic dye industry to be one of the top polluters of our world’s water. Heavy metals used to fix the color onto the fabric aren’t biodegradable. They take over 300 years to disintegrate while destroying the ecosystem and drinking water.

Until just a few generations back (or, more precisely, 160 years) before the first synthetic dye ‘mauve or aniline purple’ was discovered, there were no synthetic dyes available. Imagine that. Every piece of textile was dyed with colors from nature. Reviving the old traditions of textile dyeing, natural dyes are a sustainable alternative and a conscious step towards us living a better life.

In Brinas Studio, we extract color from seasonal plants, withered flowers, and food leftovers, or we use natural pigments. The dyeing resources, as well as the shades we can create and the techniques we can use are limitless. This is a playground of endless possible creations that are good for us and our Mother Earth.

Natural dyeing teaches you patience: every step takes longer than our capitalistically-optimized brain would want it. The sole process of preparing fabric to be dyed with natural dyes takes around 8 hours and includes 6 steps. It teaches you how to let go of control: there are so many variables influencing the final color that one simply has to learn how to flow and accept. It teaches you how to see, touch, smell, and perceive better: and once you do, once you’re present, you can see nature creating art and beauty at every step.

Brinas Studio is about finding joy in the process of creation, not only in the final result. It is about appreciating and admiring what nature offers. It is about finding an overlap where a slow manual process and modern business can coexist. It is also about finding smart solutions on how to use old(er) resources and bring them back to life. And most of all, Brinas Studio is about sending love out and sharing plant love stories.
